I hate this business model. If I gave $6 a month to you Jesse Singal Mike Pesca Robert Reich and the others I like to read it would easily be 100 a month. That's why Disney plus Netflix or even the ny times are worth it you don't get just Gail Collins or Bret Steven's or even Maureen Dowd you get them all. Why not firm a group with some like enough minded other authors. I'd be happy to give my 6 a month for a few of you but the individual support model I just can't deal with.
I mean… they were called newspapers/legacy media… then a bunch of folks decided that they didn’t want to support papers if one of the writers wrote something they didn’t like…
I wouldn’t be surprised if consolidation starts happening again… the free press is kinda doing it but accusations of Zionism will probably make for a schism in the “alternative media” space so I’m not sure if any institutions will gain/regain enough credibility to maintain themselves as a pluralistic small ‘L’ liberal heavyweight.
Now all the market forces are promoting all the combative / bombastic writers on their own to make a ton of money on Substack & all the wonkier / more local writers who would have been carried by the big names at something like the NYT are gonna see a lot less play in the market…
But I like the illusion of moral superiority that comes with being a sucker! :( Ah well, the mocking of unsuspecting free users will have to do instead.
