It's funny how the people who are going on about the Constitution all the time when they want to ensure they can buy their seventh automatic weapon seem to have no problem at all when their president completely ignores the Constitution in a situation like this. It's almost like they don't have any principles at all.
It’s weird: personally speaking it’s gotten so horrific that I can’t perceive the humor in anything to do with or about Trump. It’s nothing to do with you, Jeff, but everyday now the news delivers an unending kick in the balls.
I find the Constitutional language (“declare” war) to be interesting. To me, it scans to some extent as “initiate” war, not necessarily “recognize that a state of war already exists”.
Clearly, the military can defend itself (and presumably the US) from an attack without permission from Congress. Nobody thinks that the Navy gunners shooting at Japanese planes at Pearl Harbor were acting without proper authorization.
On the other hand, it does seem like decades-long campaigns and occupation of foreign countries should be explicitly authorized by Congress. Most things will fall in the messy middle, I suppose.
The original draft of the Constitution gave Congress the sole power to determine when the country was at war. However, the Framers came to the conclusion the language was too strict and could prevent a President from taking action against an imminent threat before Congress was able to convene and debate.
It's not so much sailors couldn't return fire at Pearl Harbor. But if the Japanese had followed up the attacks with an invasion fleet, the Constitution allows the President to use the military force to repel an invasion.
I know it isn't worth the deaths of thousands of human beings, just to make all the anti-military purists who actively or effectively supported Trump TOTALLY eat shit.
It's a great idea. A step forward. But I believe the President should have a choice of platform. Maybe he or she uses YouTube and not TikTok. Or wants to post on Reels, whatever that is.
"The Iranian military has been TOTALLY obliterated. Your favorite president, Donald J. Trump, has won a tremendous victory, and we will win more! Europe has been weak (like Norway, who did not give the Nobel prize to the president who deserved it most, me). Obama made us weak, but no more! Thank you for your attention on this matter".
Honestly, this a horrible idea. Of all the presidents we've had, except for the media whore Calvin Coolidge, Trump is the one who could master the 2 minute video (I mean he was at his peak when Twitter only allowed 110 characters and was still on form when it went to 220). And with Trump, every new video would be a new justification that had nothing to do with the prior videos. Plus, every time a new Trump Tik Tok dropped, social media would be flood by his followers posting some variation of "tRump JUSt DeSTroYEd Dems".
Ok Jeff, found the audio button in the Substack app (hey, everything's in dark mode, even comments!) BUT the British voice is FEMALE! Huh wut? That is just too jarring. Is there no escape from girlbossery?
Female, really? I did a whole article about choosing my AI voice and the voters chose the MALE British voice. Maybe Substack has updated them (which would make sense, the technology is probably advancing).
I have read every article you have ever written (except the soccer ones) and listened to every podcast but thanks anyway. I remember the gripping vote battles between the voices. I thought I was listening to NPR, the British female voice is so subdued.....
The HVAC line reminded me to change my filter. It's been a while.
Hopefully your filter wasn’t too…staind…

Honestly IMHO the process needs to be updated but I feel the “there's nothing right now” joke holds true.
To paraphrase Michael Scott:
I DECLARE "WAR!"
The original draft of the Constitution gave Congress the sole power to determine when the country was at war. However, the Framers came to the conclusion the language was too strict and could prevent a President from taking action against an imminent threat before Congress was able to convene and debate.

I mean, intellectually I know it....

Sorry: The Founders explicitly said TikTok.
You must have the Trump annotated version of the Constitution. I think it came with a Bible. Or vice versa.
This is how it would turn out:
"The Iranian military has been TOTALLY obliterated. Your favorite president, Donald J. Trump, has won a tremendous victory, and we will win more! Europe has been weak (like Norway, who did not give the Nobel prize to the president who deserved it most, me). Obama made us weak, but no more! Thank you for your attention on this matter".
And wait for three months.

Glad the feature is working for you, though.
And here’s that article:

Can we also get a 15 second update on the curtains in the ballroom at the same time?
