Even without those tweets, Talarico is going to have a difficult race ahead of him. It seems that Trump is going to (has been convinced to?) endorse the incumbent, John Cornyn, who is neither a lunatic, a grifter, or Ted Cruz.

If (when) the tweets become an issue, we'll see how good a politician James Talarico is. I can imagine him saying, "With 20/20 hindsight [pause for laughter], I realize I could have expressed myself more artfully. But if Senator Cornyn wants to waste his time fretting over a pair of six-year-old tweets, he is more than welcome to do so. I'm here to talk about issues of real concern to all Texans, issues on which Senator Cornyn and his party and his President have failed miserably: affordability, immigration, peace in the Middle East, the Epstein files."

He needs to go farther. It's not enough to be evasive. He needs to be explicit. "It's okay to be white. White people do not spread the racism virus by their mere existence." Just say it, James.

His support of "affirming" trans children and letting boys compete in girls sports have lost me. Why do these American politicians not even look into why the ultra liberal UK and Scandinavia have closed down their child gender transition clinics? Plus he believes it's more important that boys are affirmed in sports with girls while seemingly having no concern about the mental health of girls having to lose to boys in competitions created for them and share dressing rooms with them. Christian my ass.

To be really cynical for a moment: if you are looking for a politician who agrees with you on transgender issues, I guarantee there is no one better than one James Dell Talarico. He will do everything short of setting himself on fire to renounce whatever unpopular opinions he may have expressed on the matter a few years back. Whether you believe him is up to you, but either way the campaign will reveal how good a politician he is at making voters accept his change (or "change") of heart.

Former Dem's avatar

Except he just said it, it's not from a couple years ago. And are we pretending that all politicians don't do this to one extent or another? C'mon man.

Tomato, tomahto: it sounds to me like he’s trying to make the issue go away. Anyway, I don’t come here to fight with strangers. The Texas voters (I’m not one) he needs to win over will decide if his unpopular positions on trans issues, past, present (?), and future (??) are dealbreakers, even if they agree with him on all or most other issues. I hope they are not.

Former Dem's avatar

They're not deal breakers for me either, but it's highly disappointing.

I’ve seen some defenses of Talarico that it was “years ago,” and 2020 was weird. Considering that during the height of the power of the woke, people would have their lives upended by things supposedly said decades ago, in some cases when the cancelee was a kid/teenager, I don’t think that should fly. Either the democrats should disappear any candidate who went too woke in 2020, or require some form of penance. I imagine some sort of aversion theory involving being forced to actually read Kendi’s prose.

"I imagine some sort of aversion theory involving being forced to actually read Kendi’s prose."

That seems...a little extreme. Maybe something less painful, like stepping on a Lego barefoot? Just one, I'm not a monster.

Half measures won’t do

Kendi's prose? Too cruel!

Would you recommend Breakfast at Tiffany's? It's a name I see from time to time but I gotta say the title doesn't grab me.

> I mean, God doesn't really have a gender. It's God, different rules.

I regret to inform you God has pronouns and they're unambiguously male. It's right there in the original Hebrew. So T-boy tried to be woke and instead just ended up misgendering the big guy, which seems on-brand.

This is basically just a linguistic debate. The Christian conception of God is conventionally referred to as male and depicted in culture as male, but when you think about it even a little bit, assigning a gender to the singular omnipotent being who created the entire universe doesn't really make that much sense. There's no "biologically male" features of God as distinct from biologically female features.

Lucid Horizon's avatar

We're talking about a supposed Christian saying these words, though. It doesn't make a lot of sense to accept the Pentateuch as truth *except* for the bit about God being male.

Whether or not it makes sense to speak of God as having biology, it seems clear enough that this God identifies as male. Who is this Talarico to deny His identity?

And if we must consider biology, perhaps it is telling that this God impregnated a woman, rather than being impregnated by a man. This is usually considered a male ability!

The only ones who would care about this were never going to vote for Talarico to begin with.

Jesus speaks of his Father. He's got a beard. Old and white, too. Of course, it doesn't make sense. None of it makes sense. You are not supposed to think about it.

Tom's avatar

Yeah, it's really telling that the Venn diagram for "Christians who get really upset over misgendering" and "Christians who use non-male pronouns for God or refer to said entity as Mother" is practically one circle.

Former Dem's avatar

There's no God, so give him or her any gender you want as far as I'm concerned. It's disgusting that religion should even be considered relevant in any American election.

Lucid Horizon's avatar

He's the one who brought it up!

Of course, if he'd deleted the tweet only for someone to find an archived copy, the question would be "Why did you delete that tweet? Does this mean you renounce wokeness? Are you ashamed of the position you took in 2020?" Etc, etc. And then you're fucked from the MAGA right (who will eat you alive) and the Bluesky left (whose votes you could use). I kinda feel for the guy.

This is why you also need an elite hit man on retainer to take out anyone who starts asking tough questions.

Oh really Jeff? Come on, you know metaphorical violence is never the answer…..

Good points Henry. I just hope the Republican brand is so damaged by the new forever war that he squeaks in. Mr. T will be facing some hilariously horrible political commercials this fall…..

You'd have thought that all the pedophilia and sex trafficking adjacence (assuming we pretend he wasn't right there in the thick of things) would have been the straw that broke the camels back, but nope. The pro life protectors and providers don't give a crap about that.

I'm thinking the Summer of '68 was really the Summer of Love because so many people missed out on the one in '67 and now they heard about it and knew what to do.

Besides mind numbing posts from Democrats, the only lasting impact from 2020 I see is the capital B in "Black" sprinkled throughout publications. Wow, what progress!
