The argument that artificial intelligent agents should be allowed to drive us around because even if they are not perfect they drive better than humans, I think along the same lines for our new AI overlords. Say AI overlords kill tens of millions of people but deliver an otherwise beautiful utopia. I mean, come on, compare that to the socialists' body count. Don't make the perfect enemy of the good. I am so sick of natural stupidity.

Diocletian made it work, when he was actually one of the tetrarch. He retired and focused on growing cabbages on his estate, refusing requests to come back to power. The Tetrarchy quickly fell apart in that most Roman tradition, stupid civil wars over control of the state, a venerable tradition that continued almost to the fall of Constantinople.
