Long ago, my dad got a traffic ticket in Denver that he considered not only deeply unfair but an unforgivably unjust travesty and he vowed never to pay it, nor to set foot in the state of Colorado ever again. This was before I was born.

We often made family road trips in the summer between the Midwest and California: usually the Route 66 (I-40) way thru New Mexico, sometimes I-80 via Wyoming. Dad grudgingly allowed a BIT of input from kids about the route and what sights to see, but we were absolutely forbidden even to mention the possibility of entering Colorado for any reason. (I've still never been there.)

Some 40 years after the ticket, he was invited to a seminar of some sort to be held at the US Air Force Academy, which happens to be near Colorado Springs. Grrrrr. He wasn't gonna go but mom wisely pointed out that CO Springs is not really all that close to Denver, and he could just fly there and avoid renting a car (certainly not from Alamo, of course) and stay on the base for four days (and read a history book at night, no doubt). And that's what he did, and he enjoyed sneaking into CO unnoticed by the Denver tyrants. So you see, old guys CAN change.

I have no idea why I still chuckle every single time you say "the summer of love 202x" but I do.

Always ready for an Obama impression!

In an earlier version of this episode I faded the music in too early. Sorry about that! It's fixed.

Your Dad looks like a college professor in that picture (which he later became).

Interesting career arc.

He probably looked in the mirror every morning and thought "this face belongs in a college classroom. Oh, and air conditioning! There's air conditioning there."

Yeah that was around the time he decided to go back to school. I honestly don’t know if he got the sweater because he was going back to school or if he went back to school because he got the sweater.

Schrodingers sweater.....

he does look smart in the sweater and his hair is nicely and carefully styled. My dad at that point was wearing those onesie type uniforms that were gray and you’d wear in the auto factory and carried around a black lunchpail -the big kind with a thermos. And he always had a five o clock shadow. Your dad has some nicely trimmed facial hair. But you prob wouldn’t want to go to classes wearing old work clothes and having a five o clock shadow. Your dad took his schooling seriously based on this pic.

Ever consider a having a guest instead of revisiting yourself from a few years ago? But I guess that’s pretty much covered by a zillion other podcasts already.

I have guests sometimes on the Monday (paywalled) episodes and the only reason I don't have more is that booking is a pain in my ass.

Some might say Led Zeppelin was heavily influenced by certain music. Others will claim they just outright stole it and claimed it as their own. Either way, it sounds way better than the original.

They played it faster and with electric guitars.

I know “Maurer” is very German, but are you sure you aren’t Irish? Great grandfather with a second family? Very Irish.

Maybe because the truth is I don't know a thing about ol' Dewey except for his name! My 23&Me says I'm about 15% "British Isles"*, so that could be Irish.

* Confusingly, one category is "English" (I'm about a quarter), and one category is "British Isles". Now, I'm no geographer...
