Trans extremists had a decade and a half of illusory "success," first by bullying gay people (unfortunately, we're pretty easy to bully) and taking over established organizations like GLAAD and HRC. Next it was easy to bully straight liberals and pretend that any and ALL opposition to "gender affirming care" and/or boys in girls' sports MUST be religious and/or MAGA (even if the opposing voices are from Europe... well let's just forget about that Europe place), somehow forgetting that GAC and kids' sports don't have anything to do with adult trans people's rights. They pretended that the detransition rate was "less than 1%" while simultaneously harassing and threatening any detransitioner who dared to go public. They also couldn't resist dragging "intersex" DSD people into their own drama, even though DSD physical conditions have absolutely nothing to do with gender dysphoria.
"Persuasion" to these people means waiting 30 seconds before calling someone a Nazi (the 2026 tactic) as opposed to immediately calling someone a Nazi (the 2013-2023 tactic). They are oblivious to the fact that THEY got Trump re-elected. Trump might as well have paid them.
What got me this morning was a WSJ story about the teenager who killed eight people in Canada. From the outset, it referred to the kid, born a male, as "she". Give me a break. Is no place free of this absurdity?
What’s the “trajectory” of gay rights? Stonewall was in 1969, when it was legal to beat gay people in the street. My cousin was fired from an IT job in the San Diego police department in the late 80s for being seen by a colleague exiting a gay bar. More than 100,000 gay men died of AIDS in the 80s, while the President refused to fund research because it was “a gay disease.” Rampant homophobia was alive and well everywhere I ever lived through the late 90s, and Matthew Shepard was murdered in 1998. Obama ran against gay marriage in 2008. Obergefell didn’t happen til 2015! I’m just really curious how anyone can look at the past decade we’ve been (in the mainstream political world) arguing about trans rights and say “whoop, this didn’t go as smoothly as the gay rights movement.”
It's funny to see Republicans now trying to beef up Equal Time laws. For twenty years, this was a progressive bugaboo, in hopes of smashing conservative talk radio. Equal Time made some degree of sense when mass media relied entirely on finite bandwidth, which the government leased on prosocial conditions. It ceased making sense with the advent of cable, and definitely quit making sense after the Internet came into being. Jeff is right to point out the ambiguity of "public interest." I would add, how do we determine what to give equal time to? Once a year a Flat Earther pitches me to come on my show to argue about globes. Were I subject to FCC regs, should I trot out a tinfoil hat when I discuss longitude lines? Also, as a Newscorp veteran, I do not at all believe networks with an ideological agenda would make a good faith effort to find articulate, attractive representatives in order to hit a legal mandate for "both sides"
