Trump’s campaign against the Fed, if successful, could cause real harm. When a politician messes with interest rates, he often triggers inflation, and even worse: He triggers a visit from scoldy IMF officials who put a dunce cap on his head and tell him to think about what he’s done. Trump’s firing of Reserve Board member Lisa Cook might be illegal, because she can only be fired for cause, and now the courts will determine whether misstatements on mortgage documents constitute “cause”. Trump may prevail, though his case is weakened by his own words and the fact that the idea that Trump has his undies in a twist over lies on financial documents is so absurd that it sounds like a Tim & Eric bit.

So, if you’re a Democrat crafting a message in response to this, you’ve got two obvious angles:

  1. Trump will cause inflation;

  2. Trump is breaking the law.

You can debate which thing should come first (I’d put inflation first), but those are your choices. You’d have to try really hard to screw this up — as long as your statement doesn’t contain the words “Hitler” or “analingus”, you’re probably fine. But someone in Hakeem Jeffries’ office managed to screw the pooch half to death by crafting this gem:
