The full quote is “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory. Just gold everywhere.” Trump’s dictator chic is the target, ffs.
Conservatives are *not* optimizing for the midterms. Trump is toxic right now: –23% net approval. Obama remains popular. Why would you be using precious airspace to get people thinking about Trump vs. Obama if the goal is to win swing voters in key states?
Is this what Obama fans want from him? I don't like the guy, and thought he was a terrible president (mostly focused on his middle east policy), and I think he comes across here terribly. But for those of you who like him, does he come across as charming?
I don’t think it was intended as charming. He was poking fun at him. You do know Trump frequently and in a juvenile way denigrates past presidents, don’t you? He’s frequently cruel and crass. Every past president has made mistakes. None, I repeat none were anywhere near the level of tangerine twatsicle. I didn’t like Bush either but what can I say. The first black man who was president. And who was also sane, funny , kind , cautious.
Yes, Trump doesn't behave in a dignified fashion worthy of the office of president. I just don't think Obama is behaving as befits a former president either. And I'm not American, and I can't vote in your elections, but if I could, Obama mocking Trump wouldn't be a motivating factor to vote Democrat. But I'm not his target audience, so for those who are, does this fire you up and make you want to go and knock on doors and hand out leaflets?
Obama's speech works for his audience here, just as Trump's speeches work for his audience - at least I assume they do, because they don't hit for me.
Obama is in Michigan, where the Democratic vote relies heavily on the Black population. A population that is not a monolith by any means, but did vote heavily for Obama back in 2008 and 2012, and went heavily against Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024 (although to a slightly lesser degree in that case). In this election cycle, moderate Black Democrats, particularly, have been less excited about the Democratic nominee than in the past, but they still dislike Trump and his policies.
So to answer your question: yes, this works. It works in the context of getting less than enthusiastic Democrats to vote.
Obama is rallying in Michigan to get on the fence Michiganders out to vote in that election. The dynamics of that race are such that Moderate Democrats are on the fence. So going there and ripping trump plausibly may bring the on-the-fence Dems home there
NGL I love this story because it makes me feel like its 2014

Guess they have a different goal.
PS I think it should be “rushed to get sand”
Yep, and "Knights Templar", rather than "Knights Of The Templar".
Both changes made, thanks! As always, the typos are how you know I'm not AI.
I had Monty Python's "Knights of the Round Table" song on the brain.
Double smash burger and a dirty martini- I effin’ love Cheesecake Factory
