The En-Stupidening of the GOP is a National Security Threat
Things are literally dangerously dumb
The weird thing about Trump’s regime change in Venezuela is that he didn’t change the regime. Maduro’s Vice President is now the president, and she might be for some time. Trump has said that Venezuela isn’t ready for elections, and when a strongman says that a country isn’t ready for elections, that means “you’ll vote when walruses hang glide.” When Marco Rubio was asked about elections, he gave an answer that reminded me of former Colts coach Jim Mora’s famous response when he was asked about the playoffs — here are the two cut together:
Maduro’s government was indisputably awful. But since that awful government is still sort of in place…what are we doing here? The administration’s rationales are all over the place: One minute our involvement is about the flow of drugs and migrants, the next minute it’s about sanctions violations. Rubio will sometimes mumble something about democracy before reminding us that elections are NOT imminent. Surely the most sincere-sounding rationale comes from Trump when he talks like a 19th century Prussian duke coveting his neighbor’s resources. But tracing the administration’s logic reveals a disturbing truth: There is no logic. Trump’s actions don’t correspond with his purported goals. Tracing the logic of the administration’s own statements reveals that Trump is deeply confused and is putting American blood and treasure at risk for terrible reasons.
