People on here saying, "well The Left said mean things about Trump" are completely unhinged. Trump is the goddamn president. He should not be compared to the worst person you can find on Twitter. His tweet about Rob Reiner was truly abhorrent and it's telling that there is literally no defense of it that isn't simply arguing that some other people in the world are also terrible.
If both statements are true, then why are you using the presence of documentation that Reiner criticized Trump as a way to defend Trump's behavior?
It's the same refrain from people who want to defend Trump all the time. They constantly say "well so and so did this other thing so...". It's a child's argument.
Rob Reiner got where he was only because he was the SON of Carl Reiner, a truly funny man who called ME shortly before he died (VERY tragic) and told me WITH tears in his eyes, “Sir, you are the FUNNIEST man I have ever met, not like that LOSER son of mine, who owes everything he has to me giving him his start in life. Imagine having to have YOUR father open doors for you and then HAVE to bail you out when you screw up!!” Thank you for your attention to this matter.
The only thing more predictable than Trump crapping out something totally lacking in normal human decency is MAGA leaping to defend it because “well the Left did it first!” I've moved past disgust to All Dead Inside for a while now.
“His ability to never suffer consequences for his obvious inhumanity might be the most inexplicable force in the universe.”
God ain’t that the truth. The way everyone around him just prostrates themselves in blind, stupid, animal obedience to his every deranged whim is absolutely baffling to me.
Trump wouldn’t be Trump if he didn’t respond like that. If he’d responded magnanimously we’d assume he didn’t write the message and have to wonder if he’d been incapacitated and wasn’t really running the country (shudder)
Fun game idea: you write more Trump tweets and we all have a contest to see who can tell which are authentic and which you wrote, kinda like a twist on the game Zionist or Nazi?(I’m sure there are other variations.)
Not going to excuse Trump, but the left's treatment of every offense against them as Year 0 is an annoying tic.
Reiner called Trump a mass murderer and a traitor on Twitter. If your neighbor posted nonstop about you on Nextdoor and called you a murder and a sociopath you might not feel the need to be magnanimous if they pass away. You should, but it is understandable if you don't.
The left expects to be able to take pot shots all day at Republicans and have them act like Mitt Romney with a "kick me" sign on his back.
Trump is not my neighbor. He's the goddamn president. We need to hold him to a higher bar than some rando on Twitter.
It's also concerning that literally every defense of Trump is basically just, "well what about...". If you were defending a family member and you couldn't come up with any nice thing to say about them that wasn't some version of "there is also another terrible person in the world who is equally as terrible as my loved one", I would think that you'd be concerned about that.
Nobody is under any obligation to respect someone who has disrespected them.
And Reiner is not some rando - he is Hollywood.
Trump has given Hollywood more than they deserve. If I was Trump, I would have told the Chinese if they remove all of their tariffs on the US they can pirate anything Hollywood produces and the US will look the other way.
Reiner "is" Hollywood? According to who? I guess you're just making this stuff up now?
Also, what do tariffs on China have to do with the fact that previous presidents haven't danced on the graves of people who criticize them? If you can find me a quote where Biden or Obama were as horrifically insensitive to the death of a public figure, please, share it. If you can't then stop lying about how "The Left" is so terrible. You don't get to pick random people on Twitter and suggest that they speak for an entire group of people. Trump is the literal president. If you can find behavior by recent Democratic presidents that is as despicable, bring evidence.
Generally speaking, most non-democrats refer to you guys as the left. Since the Left completed its Gramscian March Through The Institutions any captured institution is included in the definition.
Bill Clinton practically gave fellatio to Scaife when he died. And Scaife was the guy who funded all the Vince Foster scandal crap. So, no, dancing on the graves wasn't the unseemly bit that prior presidents did.
You can say this is ... being "courteous" or something, but when someone tries their hardest to sink your presidency, and then you wind up "besties" with them...
Bwha? Seriously, what the everliving FUCK was that?
Oh, yes. Did you miss the President who announced, in the middle of covid, that a "Dark Winter" was coming? Did you not notice the use of code words there? Perhaps you ought to take a look at the simulation...
(Joe Biden, of course, was merely demented. Someone had been discussing it with him, and, like most demented people, he failed to compartmentalize).
These appeals to Trump as an individual with (supposedly) understandable human impulses, as opposed to an officeholder with corresponding obligations, miss the point so badly.
I agree to a point, and Trump is a special case, but the behavior of the left has been so beyond the pale over the past 10 years that I cannot muster up much sympathy.
Yes, he should be better, but the left asked for every bit of enmity it has received and his voters (who he cares about more than the left) expect him to punch you guys back.
But I would say both Trump and the Left have been assholes.
This is another classic move, to equate Trump with a poorly-defined, unelected “the Left.” It’s true that if you compare Trump to the worst internet randos or provocateur web streamers, he doesn’t look much worse. The difference of course is that Trump is not a rando, he’s the official leader of his party and the country. And you can’t find a single other person besides Trump who held such a prominent position and acted this way when a critic of his died tragically (or when, say, a war hero and statesman like John McCain died, etc.). You should just condemn him, treat him as an aberration, rather than saying “I’m not excusing him but what he did is justified and should be considered the new normal.”
There’s no one figure, but I would say to be considered a parallel figure to Trump in the Democratic Party one should be, at minimum, a current or recent high-profile elected official. Do you have a different standard to suggest?
What I’m saying is that comparing a prominent elected official—let alone the most prominent elected official in the world—to a group of random people unaccountable to anybody is a fatuous evasion.
It's not about the Trump lashing at the left. He did the same to McCain. It's all about Trump and nothing about right and left, Republican or Democrat.
Well, yes, perhaps Trump could have shown more sensitivity and civility. But for a blog that regularly calls him a "flamboyantly ignorant criminal . . . asshole . . . dick," etc. it seems a little rich to say the sensitivity and civility should start right now, this very instant, forgetting all the vile venomous spittle spewed at Trump over the years. And Reiner was up there with Stephen King in the list of "artists" with profane TDS.
Fine. Noble sentiment. But it is one Rob would not have shared. You would have been able to write almost this exact same article about how Reiner would have treated the Death of Trump under similar circumstances.
Well we don't *totally* have to speculate because we do have video of Reiner reacting to the death of Charlie Kirk (a link is in the footnote in this very article) and Reiner had a very appropriate, compassionate, human reaction.
You're faith in RR is far greater than mine and undercut by his standfast refusal to ever conceed he was wrong about anything having to do with any rumors ever floated about Trump.
And anyways. That world is dead. There is no more world where “decent behavior” will be used as some sort of rhetorical cudgel. It's just gone. Trying to accuse Trump of indecent behavior is like accusing water of being wet.
Both Sides have done this and now it's just over. I saw how Fetterman has been treated by his own party for daring to be harshly critical about those on the left who have been pushing the kinds of comments about Kirk that I guess Meathead backed away from. Who job ned Fetterman from the Democrats. I saw the reaction when a bullet almost punched it's way through Trump's brain stem. I saw the way people treated Harry Reid when he lied about Mitt Romney in the well of the Senate to help defeat his campaign and then essentially laughed it off after it was all done. I bow out.
There will be one set of rules and I know what I have seen of how Republicans have been treated. It's just done and gone.
Andrew Breitbart had the right of it. War then. Rhetorical and political for now.
No thank you. I wont pretend like "civility" is some sort of two way engagement that exists anymore. Rob would have been pouring chocolate sauce on his chest in celebration at the murder of Trump. To remotely pretend otherwise is an exercise in wishcasting. Go back and look at the parties people through for Charlie Kirk or the continuing obsession some people have with Luigi Mangeone. The world you wish for is dead and gone, and while many played a role in its destruction trying to guilt anyone into one sided decency is a sure to fail effort.
Who would you say is the most prominent person who celebrated Kirk’s death? Do you see any difference in status and obligation between that person and the President of the United States?
The Oxford chap who's president of the debate society, and actually debated Kirk. I'm sorry, but if you're willing to talk to a guy, you ought not to celebrate his death*. That's a little "close to people you know."
*You're allowed to celebrate the death of mass murderers. Hope you don't know any of them personally. It sucks.
Well, yes, we can agree on that. On the other hand, there's no point acting as if the Trump response came de novo. There is a lot of back history, so it's a bit much to act as if this is all in isolation. Just here for some Reiner TDS: https://x.com/TrumpsHurricane/status/2000674427801948668
It’s irrelevant. Bill Clinton didn’t dance on Rush Limbaugh’s grave to the tiniest degree. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama didn’t celebrate when Trump got Covid. “He started it” is juvenile even among ordinary citizens, let alone national leaders.
No, Clinton just gave "mourning" fellatio to Scaife when he died (gave the whole funeral address, etc). Am I the only one who sees this as more troubling, considering the whole Vince Foster Scandal, etc, that Scaife paid for?
If you can't see the difference between people calling out the president and someone dancing on the grave of a person who was brutally murdered by his own son, then I think you need to take a look in the mirror and figure out what needs to change about you.
Rontetc, your comment is a total jaw-dropper. Trump is legitimately hated because he's so profoundly hateful to anyone with even the slightest semblance of a moral compass. I'm talking objectively here: he's a floridly corrupt, racist, misogynist, philandering, sociopathic liar without a scintilla of civic virtue. I think it can also be said at this point that he's a genuine traitor and certainly an insurrectionist. And by Friday, we may also have concrete documentary evidence that he's a bona fide pedo. He certainly enjoyed associating with Maxwell and Epstein. "Forgetting all the vile venomous spittle spewed at Trump over the years" (?) My God, who do you think you're referring to, Mother Theresa?
Facts. Reminds me of a quote about God. Trump doesn't quite have all the characteristics of Yahweh but he's a lot closer than the rest of us.
Richard Dawkins: "The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.
IMBW probably wouldn't go out on the Tweets and start having a full on celebration in emoji form. I can continue paying the monthly fee in good conscience because I believe he would display the correct emotion, namely, "why did you assassinate Trump, you moron, you just made him a martyr". Its why I like sticking around a substack full of flaming leftist weenies, because its fun to read most of the time and insightful.
The reasons I feel absolutely nothing from or for Trumps social media blast is two fold. One, this is Trump. It is baked into the man. He is too old to change and he is at least treat Rob Reiner in death the way he treated him in life. Second, and related to the first, is that Rob Reiner would have had a joygasm hearing Trump had been murdered (by anyone under any circumstances) and would have spent an entire day posting celebration gifs, emoji laden blocks of text and pictures of himself celebrating on the streets of Brentwood (Im picturing him with a glass of champagne smiling like he just got an Oscar).
Im not saying Meathead was an animal or deserved what he got. Dying by knife attack in the middle of the night sounds horrific and Reiner final moments were not filled with one thought about anything except what nightmare was falling upon him. What I am saying is that I wont waste one molecule of outrage on or over someone who was just about as equally a tasteless, classless bore about social decorum as Rob was. I would rather he just have stuck to making good movies, but he gave that up along time ago to become a say anything to defeat those evil Republicans. He never met me but he hated me for the things he thought I believe and so as his chapter closes I am content to just shut the book and move on to something more important.
"Rob Reiner would have had a joygasm hearing Trump had been murdered"
Funny, this was Reiner's reaction to Charlie Kirk being murdered: "I don’t care what your political beliefs are. That’s not acceptable. That’s not a solution to solving problems"
Why do think he'd respond to Trump's murder any differently?
Actual administration officials were discussing using UCMJ on the astronaut-politician from Arizona. That's not normal. That's what you do when the word "treason" actually applies, and you feel like the normal judges might be a little "soft."
But by all means, listen yourself to the actual messaging, and see if you can find the code words.
Did you hear the one about putting viruses in antivirus software? It's a real fun trick.
Same thing applies to "media bias fact checker" sites. I've seen what's written about a friend of mine's newsfeed, which is "look what I did!" and "this was interesting to me today" and "robots are cool" (this, apparently, is all that's needed in order to become a disinformation page, despite ZERO commentary about anything, ever.)
I call bullshit, Zachary. You simply elide the central fact that unlike Reiner and Kirk, Trump is the fucking President and was entrusted to solemnly defend and adhere to the Constitution and represent the interests of all Americans including me and my family. Since he’s so miserably and deliberately violated this trust, I and millions of Americans will completely justified in our relief when he’s gone.
You want him to have all of the responsibilities but I am willing to bet you give him none of the benefits or plenary rights. You can't have it both ways. I have heard what his critics think of him and have seen what made them cheer when President Biden held the office. Get it down somewhere. There is no more “heads I win and tails you lose” politics anywhere. He violated a rule you would probably only ever hold him too. I heard what Biden said about me. I heard the crickets from anyone expecting him to be “Presidential” as he was raving in a red back drop of Liberty Hall, flanked by Marines. You do not realize. There are no more one way rules. Democrats will now receive what they have dished out. It's the only way to resolve the Prisoners Dilema.
Biden was completely demented at the time. Treat whatever Biden was saying as... not from a President.
That said, whomever put the red backdrop on, deserves to be shot, repeatedly, for the worst bit of presidential staging in recorded history. Seriously, the chaps running Hitler did better.
If you had a particular tweet of his in mind that showed him dancing on his grave, you'd likely have pointed me to it. Just waving in the general direction of his Twitter feed and asking me to trawl through it just to try to find -- likely in vain -- a tweet that supports your case looks like an attempt to pretend to provide evidence while saying nothing.
Spicy reply. But I dont know who you are addressing it to. There isnt a judge here and this isnt a round of Debate. Perhaps in someway I oversold his specific animosity towards Kirk. Wading through his twitter feed reveals plenty of tweet reviling Republicans and Trump supporters, which would seem to include Kirk. The comment section of a substack named I Might Be Wrong is an odd place to go diving into this idea that becauseI can be disproven anywhere, nothing else said matters.
You are getting down into the trees to avoid looking at the forrest. None of this "Well I never" pearl clutching and moral high ground policing matters anymore. Give it up. Trump will unleash a category 5 shitpost when Rosie O'Donnell dies (which I dont give him great marks to see because he just is that old), but so what Trump doesnt get down in the weeds like this with anyone who didnt get there before him.
I said elsewhere and stand by it. If when something like this happens your first response is to accuse Donald J Trump of moral terpitude...... who cares. RR accused him of being a traitor, Russian stooge, sexist authoritarian etc etc. That he was murdered by his son is a tragic ending, but there is no more "We must not speak ill of the dead and forshame upon your brow if you do".
I dont care that he is "The PResident" because the same people rushing to use that as part of the "He should be above this and h ow dare he" dont extend President Trump any of the same old fashioned respects that were once due the person sitting in the chair. You want to invoke a principal that he did something specifically bad while holding yourself to none of the traditional respects the man holding his chair was given.
So lets us stop pretending that that moral code exists and stop doing this. We may speak ill of the dead and if the Personal is Political (which side loves that maxim) then this is the world that we are going to live in.
I remember when Eminem was asked about Rap Devil (before Killshot released) saying that “it was good for him”, meaning that by the low standards of MGK’s music he managed to put out the best diss he can. I feel like this is applicable to Trump’s attempt at whatever that schizo Rob Reiner tweet was
Come on man. Pull up your panties. Be a man not a feminized version of one.
Reiner's comments about Rush Limbaugh as he was dying of lung cancer are as bad if not worse.... if you care about that stuff. Trump is just a blue collar billionaire from Queens. He says mean Tweets but only from the perspective of the upper crust easily made hysterical over speech as real males banter... they make cutting remarks at each other, and then the go get a beer together.
By now we would think the elites would just stop alarming about Trump speech. It is an indication of feminization. Trump was elected by and supported by the part of the nation that has not succumbed to the feminization. Excuse me but we don't f*cking care about his language... we care about his actions.
And 58 Democrats voted NO to condemn the murder of Charlie Kirk. THERE is the actions vs words evidence to justify getting panties in a bunch.
I’m guessing it’s not that people are Offended, it’s that people got fired for literally just quoting a dead guy the administration was deifying and treating like a major elected official instead of a culture war troll, and his followers pretended they genuinely believe a murdered person is a sacrosanct topic, and then Trump tweets out that. It’s entertaining at least to watch the sycophants scramble to explain the logic of “a few randoms on your side did it too, though it was not fine when they did it and we freaked out, but it is fine when our leader does it because, you see, the liberals… extreme radical left…snowflakes, are offended….you know, its very elitism of you to expect us to be consistent. Trump doesn’t have to make sense because PRESIDENT!”
I’m not a Democrat, can’t stand the Democrats. And I’m not outraged by Trump, good God that got boring like 8 years ago. I just find it fascinating how devoid of simple logical reasoning ability so many people are, or cynically pretend to be. I couldn’t sit there with a straight face and go along with Trump/X/MSM narratives. They really are just gangster lying at this point (i.e. not even trying to make the lies good cuz no one can do shit about it anyway). This may be due only to my particular life experiences, but I personally think reality is something to insist upon. I point out obvious gas lighting just to reaffirm for myself, if nothing else, that it’s not going to work.
Nope. You miss the point. Trump is nasty to his political opponents. This isn't news. This isn't new. Keep trying to generate outrage about it and waste everyone's time.
Meanwhile Democrats are actually assassinating their political opponents and polling that they like it.
People on here saying, "well The Left said mean things about Trump" are completely unhinged. Trump is the goddamn president. He should not be compared to the worst person you can find on Twitter. Reiner called Trump a mass murderer and a traitor on Twitter.
Sure Trump's behavior was unseemly, but we can dispense with the "well I never" act.
Do you seriously not know the difference between criticizing a public figure and dancing on the grave of someone who was brutally murdered?
I said it was unseemly. But while you want to memory hole Reiner's role as a combatant in the Great Political Culture War I won't let you.
The left's behavior has been beyond the pale the past 10 years. All's fair in love and war.
Both statements can be true (1) Trump was an asshole for saying that and (2) the left has zero standing to whine about it.
This whole kerfuffle is like arguing about who is behaving better in a fight between Bill Laimbeer and Ron Artest.
If both statements are true, then why are you using the presence of documentation that Reiner criticized Trump as a way to defend Trump's behavior?
It's the same refrain from people who want to defend Trump all the time. They constantly say "well so and so did this other thing so...". It's a child's argument.
What part of "Trump was an asshole for saying that" don't you understand?
This is literally the first time that you've been able to state that without insisting on bringing up other things as justification. Congratulations!
Don’t forget this other suppressed draft:
Rob Reiner got where he was only because he was the SON of Carl Reiner, a truly funny man who called ME shortly before he died (VERY tragic) and told me WITH tears in his eyes, “Sir, you are the FUNNIEST man I have ever met, not like that LOSER son of mine, who owes everything he has to me giving him his start in life. God, I should have done one with a "Sir..." story in it. Thanks for picking up the slack!
These people trying to defend the indefensible with whataboutisms… 🙄

Sweet Baby Jesus, some of these comments.
Who knew that "The President should not publicly celebrate a couple's murder" would be one of Jeff's most controversial takes?
Should have saved this one for "The World is Wrong, Volume 5" I guess.
He’s the king of the septic tank, and he got there saying what all the turds want to hear.
Trump wouldn’t be Trump if he didn’t respond like that. If he’d responded magnanimously we’d assume he didn’t write the message and have to wonder if he’d been incapacitated and wasn’t really running the country (shudder)

I also wonder they gave it a go bc the staffers are also Too Online and think this type of messaging is actually great…
I've lost track of the number of graves Trump has urinated on. It's becoming
a badge of honor on the left.
Historians of the future will look back and wonder:
"Did the chemical sweetener in fizzy drinks cause not only autism but a mass derangement in the minds of half of American voters? Was the
"Music Man" a prophecy?
But they will only ask if their Chinese overlords will let them.....
Not going to excuse Trump, but the left's treatment of every offense against them as Year 0 is an annoying tic.

And Trump doesn't owe the left jack.
Okay so you're just crazy then.

Out of curiosity, who does lead the Left? Or the Democratic Party? Do they have one? If not, is it unreasonable to condemn the whole mob as one?
There’s no one figure, but I would say to be considered a parallel figure to Trump in the Democratic Party one should be, at minimum, a current or recent high-profile elected official. Do you have a different standard to suggest?

And don’t forget every other POW
Trump is a counter-puncher. He will return fire whenever it is directed at him.
But 99.9999% of it comes from the left.
"The book of the Princess Bride was better." 🤣❤️
But it was!
Yeah ... it couldn't be topped 🤷♀️
Footnote 1 seems to link to the wrong clip? It shows him talking about his favorite movies.
Well, yes, perhaps Trump could have shown more sensitivity and civility. I think a good time for a bit of charity towards someone is immediately after they've been brutally murdered by a family member.

It sucks.
I guarantee this isn't true. I'm sure that Reiner had no love for Charlie Kirk, but did he do the same thing that Trump did?
Go check out the footnote
“The reasons I feel absolutely nothing from or for Trumps social media blast is two fold. One, this is Trump. It is baked into the man. “
This is textbook moral nihilism. “I feel absolutely nothing that Ed Gein loves the taste of woman-flesh. After all, it’s baked into the man!”.
Put another way, "We already knew and accepted that Trump is a deranged lunatic, therefore he gets a pass on all of his deranged lunatic behavior."
Yup
Because he didn't publically disown the Democratic Officials trying to get Trump murdered? This was an entire posting on zero-hedge, for god's sake.
"This was an entire posting on zero-hedge, for god's sake"
Zero Hedge is a bizarre conspiracy site: https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/zero-hedge/
Yes. Check his Twitter feed. I'm positive.
Link or GTFO.
Get comfortable and have a drink.
Buddy, you’re nuts.
I am not quite sure how to spell this, but yours is certainly a pithy response.
Last paragraph is hilarious—what is a condemnation if not words?? Pull up your panties!
