Yesterday, the New York Times’ ran a long piece called “Inside Biden’s Decision to Drop Out”. The article doesn’t contain any big revelations: Biden dropped out because virtually every living Democrat stopped by his house one by one and said “leave, asshole.” Eventually, he started to get an inkling that Democrats wanted him to leave. The closest thing to a revelation in the article is confirmation that Hunter Biden was, indeed, closely involved in the president’s decision. Because who better to consult in a high-stakes moment than a drug addict with legal problems and a vested interest in the outcome? I’ll be sorry to see that sage source of counsel leave the White House.

There’s been a lot of teeth-gnashing about the role played by “elites” and/or “the establishment” in the switch from Biden to Harris. This seems to be an echo of the dialogue that started when top Democrats lined up against Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020. I often don’t know what to make of that conversation. For starters, I don’t know what the parameters of “the establishment” are — it seems to include party leaders, influential pundits, and George Clooney, but how far down the pecking order does it extend? Also, liberal big-shots trying to steer the Democratic Party in a wise direction doesn’t seem shady to me — it seems like their job. Nonetheless, I’m dipping my toe into that conversation today simply to say: From where I’m sitting, the elites seem to be doing a rock solid job. You’ve really got to tip your cap to the unaccountable puppet masters shaping our world from behind a veil of secrecy.
